The following document outlines the rules of ball hockey for adult leagues in the Quinte Hockey League. These rules have been designed to ensure fair play and safety for all participants.

General Overview

Most of the Rules of Ball Hockey mirror those of ice hockey, with specific adaptations for our league format. Key rules include the following:

  • Games consist of two 25-minute periods. (55) Total Minues will alotted per game
  • There are currently no offsides rules, subject to review by the committee.
  • High sticking results in an automatic turnover and possession to the opposing team.
  • This is a non-contact league, and any harmful actions will result in suspension or removal.

Statistical Tracking and Playoffs

Standings

Team standings and individual player statistics will be updated and posted weekly.

Point System

Teams earn points as follows: Win: 2 points, Tie: 1 point, Loss: 0 points, Forfeit: -1 point.

Playoff Overtime and Shootouts

Playoff games may include overtime and shootout procedures to determine game outcomes, with specific rules for the final game of the league championships to prevent shootouts and ensure fair play.

Registration and Team Management

Teams can register in full, or individuals can register to be placed on teams. Responsibilities of team representatives include fund collection, organization, and communication with league executives. Specific details regarding roster management, including player additions and deletions, are also outlined.

Gameplay Equipment

Mandatory Equipment

All players must wear the specified equipment to participate in games:

  • Ice hockey gloves or approved ball hockey gloves.
  • Matching jerseys.
  • Running shoes.
  • Hockey sticks manufactured for ice hockey use.
  • Goalkeepers must wear CSA-approved goal masks, full legal goaltender equipment, and running shoes or boots offering additional protection.

Optional Equipment

While not mandatory, the following equipment is highly recommended:

  • Shin pads.
  • Knee pads.
  • Protective cup ('jock').
  • Soft elbow pads.
  • Mouth guard.
  • Helmet.

Team and Game Management

Details on team structure, game management, and specific roles:

  • Each team must have a designated captain and up to two assistants.
  • Only these designated individuals may discuss rule interpretations with officials during games.
  • Team rosters are set by the sixth game of the regular season; all changes must be finalized by this point.

Game Conduct

Expectations for conduct during gameplay:

  • Disorderly conduct will result in significant penalties, including potential suspension from league play.
  • Alcohol and smoking are strictly prohibited on city property; violations will lead to immediate removal and possible fines.

Fines and Suspensions

Appeals Process

Information on how decisions can be appealed:

  • All appeal decisions must be ratified before the next game.
  • A non-refundable fee is required for all appeals, which does not count towards any fines.

Team Benches

Teams must start the game on the benches as indicated on the season schedule. If not clearly marked, the team listed on the left side of the schedule is considered the visiting team. The goaltender will switch ends at the end of each period to ensure fairness.

Game Start Times and Timeouts

Games begin with a three-minute warm-up period. One minute before game time, referees will blow their whistles to signal teams to get ready. Each team is allowed two timeouts per game, each lasting thirty seconds.

Sportsmanship

While not mandatory, shaking hands with opponents before or after games is encouraged as a sign of good sportsmanship.

Awarded Goals

In situations where a team has their goaltender pulled for an extra attacker and a foul is committed by the opposing team during a clear scoring attempt, a goal will be awarded to the team that was fouled.

Unique Situations

For any unique situations not covered by the existing bylaws, the League Executive or Convenor will make decisions based on fairness and the integrity of the game.

Financial Obligations

All team registration fees must be paid in full before the first game. Unpaid fees will result in fines, and continued non-payment could lead to exclusion from league activities.

Appeals

All decisions regarding an appeal must be ratified before the team or player can compete in their next scheduled game. An appeal must be accompanied by a non-refundable payment, and no appeals are allowed for fighting majors.
