Raiders edge Port Hope

The Napanee Raiders got back into the win column with a 5-3 victory over the Port Hope Panthers in Empire Jr. C action in Napanee on Tuesday.

Peter Roy led the way offensively, scoring the winning goal in the second period and adding two assists in the game.

Daniel Long and Evan Culbert got the Raiders on the board early with Long scoring just 15 seconds into the game and Culbert adding to the lead a little more than two minutes later.

Port Hope responded with a goal early in the second period but Trevor Sweetland restored the lead two minutes later. Roy scored what proved to be the game-winner on an unassisted effort midway through the second period.

Port Hope scored twice to close the lead to one before David Cozzi rounded out the scoring with a short-handed goal early in the third period.

Culbert, Tyson Geick, Adam Ruffolo and Murray Hodgson also picked up assists and Zak Vandenburg made 31 saves in the win.

Jessie Sheppard had two goals and an assist for Port Hope and moved to within one point of Ruffolo for the division scoring lead.

It was the Raiders’ fourth win in the past five games and was a nice rebound from Sunday’s 3-2 loss in Amherstview.

Napanee (8-2-1) leads the Division A standings with 17 points in 11 games and return to action on Thursday when they travel to Picton to take on the Pirates (5-3-1).

Napanee edges Picton in battle of top teams

In Napanee, Adam Ruffolo a pair of second period goals and chipped in an assist to help the Napanee Raiders to a 6-4 win over the Picton Pirates in Empire B action on Tuesday.

The win pushed the Raiders’ lead to five points over Picton for first place in the Division A standings.

David Cozzi and Ryan Smetaniuk each had a goal and two assists in the win while Andrew Herr – with the game-winner – and David Kates also scored. Paul Fortin added two assists to push Napanee (7-1-1) to its third straight win.

Jack Davison had a goal and an assist for Picton (5-2-0) while Cale Evans, Cam Cleave and Ryan Sizer also scored. Josh Fagan had two assists in the loss.

Zak Vandenburg made 35 saves, including 19 in the third period to preserve the win whileTrevor Green took the loss after allowing six goals on 43 shots.

The Raiders return to action on Sunday when they travel to Amherstview (4-2-1) and host Port Hope (4-2-1) at home on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) while the Pirates host Amherstview on Thursday (7:30 p.m.) and Campbellford (4-3-0) on Saturday (7:30 p.m.).
